Re: if you could turn the clock back ,would you have gone to university
I enjoyed my time at uni, but it hasn't proven to be vital to my career.

Plenty of blokes I know left school at 16 and went and did apprenticeships etc and by the time I finished school, had cars, boats etc

Now I'm 40, what I did at uni nearly 20 years ago, has absolutely no relevance whatsoever, and if it was even a factor in a applying for a job I'd want to know why.

Having said that, I would absolutely encourage my kids to go, because it's a good experience, and, if they choose their degree wisely, they just might give themselves a leg up, in what is certain to be a highly, highly competitive job market in 20 years time.

Of course, I'm not going to force them into doing something they don't want to do.

I’m in my 50’s so got my degree in the 80’s it nice to have a few letters after your name on the works email. I’ve a really good job and am a fairly decent engineer.
However I have met engineers that are just as good that just went to college. Not 1 person at work has asked or even seen my degree.
If I had a choice now there is no way I’d suffer years of being poor at Uni, getting myself in debt to have a few letters after my name on a works email.
I’m glad I did mine when they were free

Me too, tho doing a part time MA was pleasant wandering the labyrinth of Houses on Gordon Square that was the History department. passing cards of Akkadian to my friends in the Union. Ripping apart St Augustine in the Union. Cheap beer in the Union. The Union. The Library.

What I studied has no relevance on my profession; However it teaches how to study, research and construct your work. So an advantage for sure.

Probably not....had a place but didn't want to go. Straight into work and have done ok for myself. Wife went, she really enjoyed it. Only once did I ever get 'you need a degree for this job' . each to their own I guess

No,

University can't teach you sales skills compared to job experience.

Luckily i left school aged 15 with 4 x shit CSE passes (3 x grade 5, 1 grade 4).

Didn't hold me back, far from it.

as others have said, and whether rightly or wrongly, it opens doors and makes an impression.

Just to get your CV on a hiring managers desk these days is tough. In my industry a good degree is nowadays pretty much a must have.

relevance is a different issue but in some ways employers simply like the fact that 1) you can be taught 2) you listen 3) you remember.

Once they know these three things; then it may just come down to whether they like you as a person.

however, having a 2:2 in bubble formation, while maybe putting you at the top of the tree for switching the machines on at upton park before the game, just tells anyone else you wasted an opportunity.

MBAs say more about your ability to pay for an MBA than they say about your ability to manage people.

I have two sons.

I generally let them get on with life and make their own decisions but there are two non-negotiable requirements :

1. they are not allowed to become priests or clerics of any kind.

2.they are going to university whether they like it or not.

Depends how old you are and how long you will keep working...

EMBA Could be a good career boost...new skills...more attractive resume...networks etc...

Provided it is from a good quality university...

Surprised its 70kQUID...Top EMBA's in USA aren't that high...maybe $75kdollars...

Good luck...but if you do it...get high grades...to stand out from the crowd...

Hornchurch...

Not true mate...not just for posh & rich...

I attended London university on a Grant ...all tuition paid for and also cash allowances for living expenses etc...

All paid for by the Government...Academic achievement and low parent's income...means test...

Went when I was young and wasted my time there.

Went when I was older and enjoyed the work.

If I could turn the clock back, I'd put every penny into Apple in the late '90s.

Re: if you could turn the clock back ,would you have gone to university
Most people seem to be able to get on a degree course these days but most careers seem to want a minimum of 2.1 in a relevant subject. This seems to eliminate many of the youngsters who graduate with a "degree".

I'm envious and admire anyone that's pushed themselves to further educate. I feel that the only way I can progress is if I got an EMBA now. I just don't understand how people can afford it though. Taking on £70k debt for a course at this stage in my life, I just don't think I can take this risk. I start a new job after my gardening leave so hopefully the company will consider sponsoring part of it.

It was for posh people or people with money when I was young, living in forest gate. Left school straight into a job. Certainly don't think I missed out not going.

Re: if you could turn the clock back ,would you have gone to university
Life was mostly boring in UK...in my early days...

As an excellent student with no connections it was a good way to progress...in the early days of the techno-meritocracy era in UK Business...

Worked out well for me...and never boring...
